Onsite at Starr King: Rising Starrs After School Program

Starr King hosts an on-site after school program run by the YMCA Urban Services , known as Rising Starrs or more commonly as “ASP”. The program runs until 6:00pm, Monday-Friday.

ASP offers homework assistance in English and in Mandarin and a number of enrichment programs. ASP enrichment programs include or have included after-school tutoring and support, yoga, private instrumental music lessons, Mandarin activities, and many evening programs such as a talent show, potluck, and STEAM Night.

San Francisco’s Recreation & Parks Department operates two after-care programs in Potrero Hill: one at Potrero Hill
Recreation Center and one at Jackson Playground. The programs run until 6:00pm, Monday-Friday. Students may be picked up early. Bus transportation to Jackson Park is provided, and children walk -- accompanied by Recreation & Park staff -- to Potrero Hill Recreation Center about two blocks away.

San Francisco Recreation & Parks ASP is a structured after school experience for youth in grades K-5. Components include homework and literacy assistance; communication and empowerment skills; and recreational activities including sports, group games, arts and culture, community exploration and seasonal events.

Tuition is $900 for the academic year. Payment plans are available.

H & P Happy Genius Chinese Learning

H & P Happy Genius Chinese Learning is a Mandarin Immersion after school program in the Sunset District. They provide Mandarin Chinese lessons, homework assistance, math assistance, arts and crafts, and outdoor play. All the activities are in Mandarin. They provide afternoon snacks for the children in a nut-free environment. Happy Genius staff also transports students by van from Starr King to their location in the Sunset. The program runs Monday-Friday until 6:00pm.

Panda Kung Fu Center is a bilingual (Mandarin and English) after school program offering Kung Fu, art and Mandarin lessons. They teach competitive Wushu, kick boxing, lion dancing, soccer, ping pong, rope skipping and ball games. Children also receive homework tutoring and Mandarin lessons. Panda Kung Fu transports students from Starr King to their center in the Sunset. The program runs Monday-Friday until 6:00pm.

Potrero starrs is a community space that offers a Mandarin immersion after school program. They offer Chinese and math homework assistance, Chinese lessons, arts & crafts, and yoga all taught in Mandarin. Just minutes away from Starr King elementary school, `students can be picked up at school by staff which will walk them back to the site on blocks away from Starr King (10 minute walk). The program runs Monday - Friday until 6:00pm.
